Tzaneen Dam

Previously known as Fanie Botha Dam is located on the Letaba River, just outside the town of Tzaneen on the extreme Northeast lowveld of South Africa. The dam is located in a scenic part of the country and is stocked with Florida strain Largemouth Bass. A severe drought some years ago saw the dam almost empty and Bass almost die out but adequate rains since then have seen the fish bounce back. Fish in the 3 to 4 kg range are caught on a regular basis.

There are even a few Smallmouth Bass in the lake, they are occasionally caught though not often. If you ever catch a Bass that hits your lure like an express train, heads for the depths at a major rate before getting airborne, you might just have been fortunate enough to have latched on to one of these elusive fish.

The dam is a fixture on the tournament circuit being the venue for several competitions, including the annual Tzaneen Bass Classic held in June of each year. The hot summers, mild winters and water temperatures that seldom drop below 17 degrees Celsius make this a year round Bass fishing venue.

Agatha Crocodile Ranch

The Ranch offers adventurous daily tours, an opportunity to touch a baby crocodile and also to feed the bigger crocodiles, a curio shop and a local art gallery. Agatha Crocodile Ranch was set off by Milan and Blanka Darazs in 1978. It all happened when Blanka gave her husband two baby crocodiles as a present. Today, Agatha Crocodile Ranch is a complete crocodile farm that offers tours to visitors all over the world.Milan and Blanka are originally from Bratislava and immigrated to South Africa in 1969. They slowly turned Agatha Crocodile Ranch into a popular tourist attraction in the Limpopo Province.

Sunland “Giant” Baobab tree

Carbon dating has been used to estimate the Big Baobab’s age at ± 6000 years. To put this in perspective the tree is possibly older than the Giza Pyramids and was certainly here thousands of years before the birth of Jesus Christ. When the first leaves sprouted the Sahara Desert was still lush and green and our Iron Age ancestors were roaming the land.Sunland’s Baobab is 22 meters high, and is some 47 meters in circumference. It is still (and is likely to remain so) "the record holder for the species", according to the SA Dendrological Society. They squared off a natural vent in the trunk to make a door and installed a railway sleeper pub inside the trunk, complete with draft beer, seats, a music system and space for nearly 60 people. A wine cellar has been installed in a second hollow, with a constant temperature of 22° C, ventilated by natural vents. The tree blooms gloriously in spring. It is home to many bird species, including two pairs of owls.
