Location: South Africa » Northern Cape » Karoo » Port Nolloth

diamond coast

Both Port Nolloth on the ‘diamond coast’ and nearby McDougall’s Bay are very popular holiday destinations, offering the nature lover, angler and diver a unique experience. Fine examples of the Nama culture can be viewed at Lekkersing, north of town. Port Nolloth was established in 1854 as a copper export harbour. Ore was brought here by rail for shipment overseas until well into the 20th century, but the harbour’s narrow entrance was unsatisfactory, and Cape Town’s harbour proved to be a more practical alternative. The area is one of the driest in South Africa, and until recently received it’s drinking water by boat. Port Nolloth is also notorious for it’s mists, called Malmokkie by the local Nama people. The village is the only holiday resort town on the Diamond Coast.
